IGO - Synth Love released in Hong Kong

Antidote co-founder and designer B6 has a electro-new wave-synth-pop band with JJay Wu (who has guest DJ'd with Antidote also). They're from Shanghai and they're called IGO. IGO's first album, Synth Love, released on Modern Sky Records in mainland China, has been released in Hong Kong with Universal Music. "Synth Love" will be on the shelves at HMV shops around Hong Kong in May 2008. We're also expecting MTV and radio play in the HK market.

IGO is a self-produced independent act with song-writing by JJay Wu and all production and instrumental work (and design!) by B6. Distribution by a major record label for an act like this is unprecedented in China.

IGO was formed in 2006 as a Synth Pop duo. The band members are JJay (vocals, songwriting, programming) and B6 (electronics, programming, visual and music production). JJay originally came from Beijing and formed a few post punk bands during the years he studied in Shanghai. After he finished a master's degree in science in the US, he came back to Shanghai and met with B6 in 2004. As the most famous native DJ in Shanghai, B6 played frequently in the major nightclubs of Shanghai and quickly built up a solid following. B6 is also an electronic music producer, and has published multiple compositions, including the background music for a Nike advertisement. He is also the founder of Neocha.com, one of the largest internet platforms for youth indie-culture in China. With totally different background, but shared passion for Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk and Royksopp, they decided to form a band.

Originating from the English translation of the Chinese black and white chess game, the name of IGO suggests a unique feeling with sheer simplicity. This applies to all aspects of the band -- their music, visuals and live performances.

In Sept. 2007, IGO signed a mainland distribution deal with Modern Sky Records and released their highly anticipated debut album "Synth Love", now to be released by Universal Hong Kong in spring 2008. The album has been warmly reviewed by critics and fans all over the world and is considered the first authentic electro pop album of China. An hour's electronic experience, the warm side of the melody and vocal quenched by the cold yet lush synthetic sound and delicately designed dance beats. As suggested by the title, IGO shows us how love is synthesized by technology.

We can proudly say that IGO is the ONLY band in China who is capable of updating the Chinese indie music scene, propelling it to the forefront of the popular music world dominated by musicians from Britain and the US. And this could only possibly happen in such an international city as Shanghai -- the perfect stage for showing the developing and opening up of Modern China in a positive way.

"City Sound Sessions" will feature music from 3 select cities in one night. Each month's event will focus on 3 different cities from around the world, with 3 or more DJs playing sets of music entirely from these cities.

Each DJ or crew will be knowledgeable about the city they select, and provide a bit of musical education while they rock the party. They are under strict orders to select music that is produced in their chosen city.

Starting the night with more relaxed tunes, and climaxing with dance music, we will explore the sounds unique to the world's great music cities. We'll bring out the classics that each city is known for, as well as showcase the newest innovations in music from these cities.

The next City Sound Session will take place Thursday, May 8, 2008 @ The Shelter, 5 Yongfu Lu, near Fuxing Xi Lu, Shanghai… starting at 10pm. Admission is only 10 RMB. There is no dress code, but we encourage you to dress as inspired by one of the night's 3 cities.

LOS ANGELES [USA] – DJ Sarah Mascara is from the USA and started her DJ career on college radio, playing eclectic sets from post-rock to odd-ball electronica. Tonight she will drop a selection of music entirely from LA – 80s hair metal, skate-punk, rockabilly, and west coast gangsta rap.

RIO DE JANEIRO [BRAZIL] – DJ Siesta, the queen of drum and bass, will dig out her best Brazilian beats, from smooth samba classics to modern baile funk.

BERLIN [GERMANY] – One of Germany's finest turntable talent exports, DJ Kamikaze, will explore the dynamic sounds of Berlin. Currently experiencing a musical renaissance, Berlin is setting trends, while remaining far too wacky for anyone else to get. We love it.
