Antidote: About Us

The Antidote is a group of electronic musicians and DJs based in Shanghai, China.

We hold regular new music parties in Shanghai, and occasionally bless other cities with our music. We started in the summer of 2005 as a reaction to the prevailing norms in modern Shanghai's nightlife and music scene. Thus the name "Antidote."

Most live music and DJ club events in Shanghai are outrageously priced (or at least the drinks are), especially by local standards. Most Chinese young adults cannot afford to go out and experience a dance club or see live electronic music. And there are few choices available that are not big-club, mainstream house and hip hop, usually only with token *foreign* DJs and often mostly foreigners attending.

So, most Antidote parties are FREE to enter, and the drinks are cheap. And you're not required to wear a suit or reserve a table. (For some special events, we need to have a small door charge to pay for expenses).

Our current regular monthly venue is C's Bar. We love the atmosphere here. They were nice enough to let us come in on a weeknight and play our crazy weird music. God bless them. Antidote #1 had over 300 people pack the small bar. We played indie rock, punk, IDM, breakcore, left-field techno, trip hop, synthpop, and electro, all mixed with our own productions.

Most of our music is played using laptop computers and peripherals -- effects instruments, mixing consoles, and even home-made instruments. Some of our music is original and live, some is DJ-mixed with various software. We are DJs, and we are also recording artists. So we might be mixing in a song by our favorite artist, with something we've created at home in the bedroom or studio, or just live on the spot.

Original Line-Up...

We started out having informal meetings in Ozone's living room, with a purpose of sharing music that we liked, giving each other music history lessons, playing demos we were working on, and drinking beer. In 2005 we decided to make it a public event, and years later it's still going strong.

Ozone - From San Francisco, living in Shanghai since 2003. Former radio and club DJ in California; worked in various roles in the music industry since 1987. The name "Antidote" came from Ozone's college radio show many years ago.

B6 - From Shanghai, China. B6 is an electronic musician and graphic designer. He's recorded a variety of music styles under several names. He founded the "Isolation" record label -- designing, producing, and releasing CDs for Chinese underground musicians. B6 frequently plays live digital or DJs at nightclubs and special events.
He has a new synth-pop band called IGO, and is a co-founder of Neocha.com

MHP - From Shanghai, China. MHP is an electronic music producer, movie sound engineer, commerical music producer and stage designer. In 2000, he produced several electronica albums, including AITAR (with B6), AITAR2, and THE SOUND OF SILENCE PROJECT. His early career involved experimental electronica, and the recordings were freely distributed. In 2004, his interests turned to producing techno music and being a techno DJ.

Emcore - From Gansu, China. Emcore records ambient and abstract hip hop in his home studio. When DJing, he plays an eclectic mix from trip hop to left-field house breaks. He was formerly an editor for a popular culture magazine in China.

AMNJK - From Japan, now living in China. Amnjk was born and found underneath a bridge. Influenced by hip hop at an early age, he now records music best described as "hiphop punktronica." Independent music label 19-t gave him a crappy studio but he ended up recording some wicked tunes. His dream is to open an izakaya bar in Tokyo.

Besides the original line-up, we have several regular members and guests, including Shanghai_Ultra, r3, Fish, Ben Huang, Sulumi, etc.

Bookings / Events / Gigs

Currently (2008) we have 2 regular monthly events in Shanghai:

* Last Thursday of every month at C's Bar. These are always free entry.

* The "Antidote Live" series, at various venues, with headliner talents playing live electronic music. These are usually in the middle of the month, on a Friday or Saturday night. There is a small entry fee for these.

(* We also organize the "City Sound Sessions" once a month, at various venues.)

---------------------------

Apart from these, we are available for bookings in other cities. We prefer to host a party covering the whole night, with a minimum of 3 of our DJ/talents.

In some cases, we can play an hour set with one or two of our DJs, as support for special events or major talents, or at music festivals.

Just be clear to tell us what kind of music is appropriate, so we can give you the right DJs. We don't play mainstream house or hip hop, sorry.

Chinese About Us

关于Antidote

Antidote现在有8位驻场音乐家:B6(上海), MHP(上海), Ozone(美国), Fish(上海), Boya(美国), Shanghai_Ultra(英国)。以及Part Time成员:Kid Plastik, r3, Q男, Amnjk。另有我们的嘉宾:Sulumi, iLoop, Siesta, Dre Skull, Ben Huang, Lei Jun Acid Twin, Mr. Particle,Yen Why, Wolf Candy, SS, more...

我们的音乐大致是 electro-punk indie rock, punk, IDM, breakcore, left-field techno, drum and bass, trip hop, African, Indian/Bhangra, synth-pop和 electro。
